Hettiarachchige Don Sujith, cousin of Welle Saranga was fatally shot near Mahaba’s Alapitivala junction last Wednesday (21), with the perpetrator revealed to be a corporal from the 4th Gamunu Army Battalion stationed at the Batticaloa Chengaladi Military Base.
Investigations conducted by the Special Task Force uncovered startling details, indicating that the assailant, along with accomplices, had traveled to Ragama by train to execute the murder before returning to the military camp.
Efforts to apprehend the suspect were initially thwarted when he managed to evade arrest at the Chengaladi camp. However, the Army Intelligence Division successfully apprehended the fugitive in the Ampara area.
The murder appears to be orchestrated by a criminal network associated with underworld figure Nipuna. The main suspect, a soldier who had previously absconded from the Army’s Gamunu Seva Battalion, was already in custody prior to this incident.
Further revelations from the arrested suspect have led investigators to uncover the involvement of two ex-servicemen and three active servicemen in the crime, shedding light on the extent of the conspiracy.
As the investigation unfolds, authorities are piecing together the intricate web of connections underlying this heinous act. The swift action taken by law enforcement and military intelligence underscores the commitment to uphold justice and maintain public safety.
