The blood dialysis unit for kidney patients at Kurunegala Teaching Hospital has been temporarily shut down following the deaths of several patients reportedly due to contamination.
Hospital sources have confirmed the closure, citing concerns over a series of patient fatalities attributed to germs entering the bloodstream during the dialysis procedure. The exact cause of these deaths remains undisclosed, prompting the Ministry of Health to launch a comprehensive investigation into the matter.
According to reports, patients admitted for blood transfusion over the past week have tragically passed away from complications, with more than five deaths recorded during the transfusion process. However, insider sources suggest that the actual death toll could be significantly higher.
Chemists within the hospital suspect that a chemical administered during blood transfusions may have contributed to the fatalities, resulting in a drop in blood levels post-transfusion.
In response to the alarming situation, a team of officials from the Ministry of Health is slated to visit Kurunegala today (24) to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident. Their findings are expected to shed light on the circumstances surrounding these tragic deaths and pave the way for necessary remedial actions.
