The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) yesterday (07) informed the Negombo Magistrate’s Court that it had received intelligence indicating a possible serious security threat at the Negombo Court premises.
In view of the potential security risk, the CID made an urgent request to the court to summon only those individuals directly involved in the relevant cases for future proceedings. Taking the request seriously, the Chief Magistrate and other relevant officials were informed to make the necessary arrangements without delay.
The intelligence information came to light during investigations conducted by three special CID teams appointed to probe the recent violent incident at the Negombo Prison.
Meanwhile, a group of senior CID officers led by Shani Abeysekara arrived at the Negombo Court and held a special meeting in the Magistrate’s official chamber. Following a request by the Director of the CID, judges and lawyers who were present at the court complex were immediately called to the Magistrate’s office and briefed on the security situation.
Authorities said the situation at the Negombo Prison is now fully under control. However, in response to the intelligence received and the security concerns surrounding the court, additional police officers and Police Special Task Force personnel have been deployed to strengthen security around the prison, the court premises, and the surrounding area.
