Dr. Palitha Mahipala, the Health Secretary, has announced the formation of a specialized committee comprising five experts to probe the tragic deaths of multiple patients in the Dialysis Unit of Kurunegala Teaching Hospital.
Headed by Epidemiologist Dr. Samitha Gini, the committee comprises specialists in various fields, including virus diseases and hematology.
Dr. Mahipala revealed that immediate measures have been taken to transfer patients undergoing blood transfusions at the teaching hospital to neighboring medical facilities within the district. Hospitals such as Nikaveratiya, Pol Pithigama, Dambadeniya, and Kuliapitiya have been designated to provide continued care to these patients. Transport arrangements have been organized to facilitate their transfer.
Emphasizing the urgency of the situation, Dr. Mahipala stressed that the committee’s findings regarding the cause of death of patients undergoing blood filtration are eagerly awaited. Efforts are underway to expedite the investigation process to provide clarity and address concerns surrounding the tragic incidents.
