Think about people’s lives before you think about the election…

Ven Dr. Omalpe Sobhitha Thera has requested the Chairman of the Election Commission to immediately postpone the proposed general election as a measure to save human lives from the Covid 19 virus.

Sobhitha Thera also said that although the protection of human lives is more important than anything else in the world, regrettably priority is being given to holding the elections rather than ensuring human lives are protected.

While appreciating all the steps taken by the President and the health staff to suppress the coronavirus, he pointed out that if the relevant steps had been taken at an early stage without waiting for the nominations to be accepted for the general election, the corona would have been better controlled.

He said that today candidates are engaging in politics without following health advice and as a result, there is a risk of the Covid 19 virus spreading rapidly across the country.

He further stated that the Elections Commission and the leaders of the political parties should sit down together and decide to postpone the election to save the people from an impending catastrophe which might arise if political aspirants continue to act without paying attention to the current situation.
