Two individuals were apprehended near Sri Dalada Palace in Kandy on suspicion of possessing 31 empty bullet casings. The suspects claimed that they were holding the casings for scrap metal purposes and no evidence of criminal intent has been found thus far. Consequently, both suspects have been released on bail. Senior Superintendent of Police Nihal Talduwa, the Police Media Spokesman, made this announcement to the media.
According to the Police Media Spokesman, the discovery of these empty bullet casings occurred during a routine inspection of a garbage truck assigned to remove waste from the Sri Dalada Palace. Security personnel found a bag containing 31 T56 ammunition cartridges, which had been kept separately within the vehicle.
Further details revealed that the two suspects were in the process of collecting garbage from an army camp in the vicinity when they were questioned and subsequently apprehended. Both the driver and assistant of the lorry explained that they had set aside the empty bullet casings with the intention of selling them as scrap metal rather than for monetary gain.
The Police Media Spokesman emphasized that the investigation into the incident is ongoing and that the police are actively pursuing leads in the case.
