Severe Impact Predicted for North and Trincomalee as Cyclone Approaches

The Department of Meteorology has issued a warning for 28 November 2024, predicting severe weather conditions due to a deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal. As of 2:30 a.m., the system was located 100 km northeast of Trincomalee. It is expected to move slowly north-northwest and intensify into a cyclonic storm later today.

Weather Impact on Regions
Northern Province & Trincomalee District

These areas are likely to experience very heavy rain (over 150 mm), frequent thunderstorms, and strong winds of 60-70 km/h.

Heavy showers exceeding 100 mm are expected, along with strong winds. can be expected in North Central & North-western Provinces, Matale, and Kegalle Districts  Rainfall and occasional thunderstorms will occur across the island. Winds up to 40-50 km/h are possible in other areas of the country.

The public is advised to take precautions to minimize damage from strong winds and lightning. Authorities urge people to stay alert and follow safety guidelines during this period of severe weather.
