The Sri Lanka Freedom Party’s Central Committee, which met yesterday, has decided to withdraw from the People’s Freedom Alliance for all other institutions except for a few local government institutions in Colombo and Ampara districts.

This decision has been taken after the majority of the Central Committee members were adamant that the Sri Lanka Freedom Party should withdraw from the Alliance.

Due to the power struggle over the leadership of the alliance and the fact that the Sri Lanka Freedom Party is not getting a fair number of candidates for the election, it is best to take the best possible opportunity to contest LG elections all alone as the Sri Lanka Freedom Party for the local government bodies.

Sri Lanka Freedom Party Senior Vice President Prof. Rohana Lakshman Piyadasa stated that yesterday the Sri Lanka Freedom Party Political Central Committee decided to contest all the other local government bodies under the hand symbol except Colombo and Ampara local government bodies.

He further stated that he decided to officially inform the other parties of the alliance today.

When asked if the Sri Lanka Freedom Party has decided to withdraw from the Alliance, which rallied around the helicopter symbol, the senior vice president said that a specific decision will be made in the near future.

The other allied parties are of the opinion that there is no point in retaining the Sri Lanka Freedom Party in the United People’s Alliance under the present circumstances.
