Venerable Omalpe Sobitha thero accused Sajith Premadasa of dereliction of his obligations and duties as the opposition leader to form the government despite repeated requests by the religious leaders to take over the premiership to salvage the country from further deterioration.
When the Prime Minister quits or deserts his post, the opposition leader would have accepted it in the right spirit, the Ven thero emphasised. Instead, Mr Premadasa gave various excuses to turn down the request. The Ven, Thero told the Sirasa TV channel in a telecast.
Removal of a President or reducing his power is a constitutional task.
Mr Premadasa, however, took up the position that the President should quit for him to take over the government. The prelate said the stance of the opposition Leader is unacceptable.
“When we told him to nominate another name from his party if he didn’t want to accept the position, Mr Premadasa was dillydallying,” Thero said.
The Ven Thero said that Mr Premadasa was reluctant o accept challenges.
“The opposition lacks enthusiasm and the ability to accept challenges. It was the impression created during the recent discussions”.Ven Omalpe thero said.
