A young woman who sustained severe burns in a fire that erupted on October 27th in a clothing store on Second Cross Street, Pitakotuwa, has passed away due to her injuries today (03) while receiving treatment at the Colombo National Hospital.
The police report that the victim was in critical condition after being caught in the fire and had been under intensive care at the Colombo National Hospital. The deceased, was a 22-year-old resident of the Watawala area.
In total, 19 individuals were injured during the fire and subsequently admitted to the Colombo National Hospital. The blaze had ignited in a textile store situated within a six-story building on Second Cross Street in Pitakotuwa, around 09:30 in the morning shortly after the store had opened.
With the concerted efforts of 45 officers from the Colombo Fire Service Department and the deployment of 11 fire engines, the fire was eventually brought under control within a span of two hours.
Authorities believe that the fire was initiated by a diesel container catching fire during the store’s morning operations, which then spread to the generator, resulting in the devastating incident.
