Mahinda Kodituvukku, who claimed to be an enlightened Bodhisattva and was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department, has been remanded by the Fort Magistrate’s Court following a hearing on the matter.
Kodituvukku arrived in Sri Lanka from Egypt on the January 01st,2024 and spent two weeks in the country, receiving worship from followers and delivering sermons. However, concerns were raised about the nature of his teachings, with complaints filed by various parties, including the Commissioner General of Buddhist Affairs, stating that the character of the Buddha and Buddhist religious teachings were being insulted.
The Computer Crime Investigation Division initiated an investigation into Mahinda Kodituvukku, leading to a report being submitted to the Fort Magistrate’s Court. A travel ban against the suspect was obtained, and two weeks later, the Trianikaika Maha Nayaka Theras sent a memorandum to the President, emphasizing the corruption and distortion of Buddhism in the country, specifically naming Mahinda Kodituvukku.
Following these developments, Kodituvukku was arrested by the Colombo Computer Crime Investigation Division. The Fort Magistrate’s Court ordered his remand after considering the charges related to potential insults to the character of the Buddha and distortion of Buddhist teachings.
