The Road Development Authority has taken steps to light the Katunayaka expressway by laying cables instead of the copper current cables worth 25 crore rupees stolen by thieves after two fatal road accidents including the one that claimed the life of State Minister Sanath Nishantha.

Darkness has been identified as one of the causes of accidents on the highway during night.
Transport, Highways and Mass Media Minister Bandula Gunawardena told Sri Lanka’s English daily, Daily Mirror that the Road Development Authority decided to lay aluminum cables for electricity transmission along the expressway connecting the airport as per the advice of engineers.

However, he said the project has been delayed and the officials concerned have been instructed to complete the work in a month.
