Galle Additional Magistrate Lakmini Widanagamage has ruled on the case involving a Russian tourist, ordering compensation totaling 17 lakh eighty thousand rupees for damages incurred by a train collision. Additionally, a fine of 56,000 rupees was imposed for traffic rule violations.

The incident occurred on January 23, 2023, when the suspect, Loskotu Alexander, disregarded railway signals and drove his car onto the tracks, resulting in a collision with an express train en route from Beliatte to Mahawa. Both Alexander and another passenger sustained injuries and were hospitalized at Karapitiya Teaching Hospital.

The collision caused significant damage to the train engine and color signaling system. Following the incident, the police filed charges against Alexander under Motor Traffic Regulations, while the Railway Department sought compensation for railway property damage.

During the hearing, Alexander’s lawyer informed the court of his client’s intention to plead guilty, as the tourist prepares to depart the country by February 29.th
