Prominent Sri Lankan Politician Gamini Jayawickrama Perera Passes Away at 83

Gamini Jayawickrama Perera, a prominent figure in Sri Lankan politics and a former representative of the United National Party, breathed his last today (17) morning after battling a prolonged illness.

Born on February 17, 1941, Jayawickrama Perera, aged 83 at the time of his demise, had been a prominent figure in the political arena. Educated at Nalanda College, Colombo, he exhibited his leadership skills early on, serving as the captain of the college’s cricket team during his youth.

Entering politics in 1994, he swiftly rose through the ranks, representing the Kurunegala district in the 15th Parliament of Sri Lanka. Throughout his illustrious career, he held various ministerial portfolios, including Minister of Food Security, Minister of Sustainable Development and Wildlife, Minister of Buddha Sasana, and Minister for Irrigation and Water Management. Notably, he served as the Chairman of the United National Party until 2013, wielding significant influence within the party and the broader political landscape.

Jayawickrama Perera’s dedication to public service and his advocacy for sustainable development and wildlife conservation earned him widespread respect. In 2016, he was elected as the Chairman of the Asia Pacific Regional Forum, further solidifying his stature on the international stage.
