Police Media Spokesman, DIG Ajith Rohana stated that the condition of one of the two prison officers rescued today morning after being taken hostage by inmates at the Mahara Prison is in a serious condition.
“They had argued with the prison officials and two officials were taken into custody by these inmates, as I was informed by the Commissioner General of Prisons.” he said.
While the guards have now been hospitalized, DIG Ajith Rohana said the guards were rescued from the inmates when they had attempted to escape the prison from one of its gates.
In total nine guards taken hostage by the inmates have been rescued since.
He noted that the prison unrest had continued for 14 hours and during the time the inmates had engaged in various activities including setting things on fire, damaging property etc.
Officials have taken steps to remove the remand prisoners in Mahara prison to Welikada.
