The Sri Lanka Police plan to purchase 5,000 body-worn cameras (BWCs) to assist traffic police officers in their duties, police sources said.
According to sources, this decision was made to address allegations made by certain parties regarding the conduct of traffic police officers while on duty. The police aim to verify these claims using body-worn cameras as technical evidence.
Each camera is estimated to cost around Rs. 1.5 lakh.
When asked about this, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) in charge of Traffic Control and Road Safety, Indika Hapugoda, stated that the cameras would be ordered from China.
Additionally, the Sri Lanka Police are considering purchasing more laser speed cameras from the United States in the future to enhance road safety and reduce accidents.
