The owner and manager of a foreign employment agency that sent Sri Lankans to serve in the Russian military were arrested yesterday (15) by officers of the Special Investigation Division of the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE).

The SLBFE stated that the alleged foreign employment agency had informed job applicants that they would be sent for civil service in the Russian military under tourist visa categories. However, these Sri Lankans were forced to fight on the frontline. The SLBFE has received 7 complaints regarding the alleged foreign employment agency, noting that it defrauded more than Rs. 10 million.

Accordingly, the alleged foreign employment agency operated under the name Champika Export Foreign Employment Company at Stanley Thilakaratne Mawatha in Nugegoda. During the raid, two individuals who worked as its owner and manager were arrested by SLBFE investigating officers. The suspects have been ordered to be remanded until the 30th after being produced before the Negombo Magistrate’s Court.
