The Sri Lankan Embassy in Russia has reached out to the country’s security authorities, requesting information regarding Sri Lankans who have joined the Russian army.

Ambassador Janitha Liyanage highlighted the trend of foreign nationals, including Sri Lankans, joining the Russian military, often on tourist visas. Concerned about the lack of specific information, the embassy has urged Russian security chiefs to provide details if Sri Lankans are serving in the military.

Liyanage emphasized the importance of individuals informing the embassy if they are aware of any Sri Lankans joining the Russian armed forces.

Recent reports in foreign media have indicated the deaths of several Sri Lankans serving in the Russian army. However, due to insufficient information, the embassy has been unable to confirm these reports or ascertain the status of Sri Lankans involved in military service.
