State Minister of Defense Pramita Bandara Tennakoon has announced that the government expects to reduce the number of army personnel by more than half by the year 2030.

Minister Tennakoon noted that currently, the country has more than 280,000 army personnel.

He pointed out that this decision was made by the President and the Security Council based on the recommendations of an expert panel appointed to review the country’s security.

However, given the existing geopolitical conditions, the government has decided to further strengthen the navy and air force, the minister said.
