Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has been filmed enjoying a serving of “very delicious” fish sashimi from Fukushima, as tensions rise over the release of treated radioactive wastewater into the Pacific Ocean following the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster.
The move comes as a response to a dispute over the discharge of filtered water from the nuclear site. While the United Nations’ atomic energy regulator assures that the released water poses minimal risk to the environment and human health, China, a major consumer of Japanese seafood, recently imposed a complete ban on imports due to concerns about the safety of its citizens.
China’s decision has significantly impacted Japan’s seafood industry, prompting the Japanese government to showcase the safety and quality of their produce through Prime Minister Kishida’s public consumption of Fukushima fish.
