Sri Lanka’s most spectacular cultural pageant, The Kandy Esala Perahera, is set to begin on August 5th. Spanning ten days, this event showcases vibrant processions, traditional music, and dance, drawing thousands of participants and spectators to the historic city of Kandy. The festival will officially commence on August 5th with the ritual of Kap ceremony at the four Devalaya premises. This ritual, taking place at 4:10 AM, marks the start of the sacred celebrations that have been a part of Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage for centuries.
From August 10th to 14th, the Kumbal Perahera will take center stage. The processions will depart from the four Devalaya and travel along Kumbal Perahera Street, beginning at 6:06 PM on August 10th. These parades are known for their elaborate decorations, traditional drummers, and dancers, all contributing to a mesmerizing spectacle.
Following the Kumbal Perahera, the Randoli Perahera will be held from August 15th to 19th. The highlight of this period is the first Gold Doli Procession on August 15th at 6:37 PM. The celebrations will conclude with a Day Perahera on August 20th.
