Six students from Jaffna University, who were initially granted bail by the Eravur court after being arrested during a protest in Batticaloa, were later imprisoned as they were unable to provide proof of residence and identity.
The students had joined a protest initiated by a group of farmers in Mylathamadu, Madawan, Batticaloa. They were arrested by the Batticaloa Sandiveli Police for allegedly obstructing people and vehicles, disrupting public order.
While the students initially pleaded guilty, Eravur Acting Magistrate Anwar Sadat ordered their release on bail of one lakh rupees each. However, they were detained due to their inability to prove their residence and identity.
In response to the students’ arrest, a protest was organized by Jaffna University students, who claimed that the police had unlawfully detained the six university students.
