Dr Asela Gunawardena, the current Director-General of Health Services, will be removed and the DG position will be replaced by long time heath administrator Dr. Amal Harsha de Silva Sources said to Lankasara. Currently, Dr Amal Harsha is functioning as the Secretary to the State Ministry of Rural Development and Animal Husbandry and Small Economic Crop Promotion.
Although few seniors of the Health Ministry such as Dr. Kumara Wickramasinghe, Director of the Colombo National Hospital, Dr. Sunil de Alwis, Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Health and Dr. Lal Panapitiya, Deputy Director-General of Health Services have been nominated for the post sources said Dr Amal Harsha De Silva will be appointed to the DG post.
He was recently removed from the field of health administration and appointed as the Secretary to the Ministry of State for Backward Rural Development and Domestic Animal Husbandry and Minor Economic Crop Promotion. The same thing happened to Dr. Anil Jasinghe, an excellent health administrator.
In an inquiry made by Lankasara to Dr. Amal Harsha regarding this new appointment, he stated that the government has made a request take over this position
Meanwhile it is reported that the post of Health Secretary too is likely to change. Retired Major General Sanjeewa Munasinghe, who is currently the Health Secretary, is likely to be replaced by Dr. Nihal Jayatilleke, according to Health Ministry sources.
