The Supreme Court has decided to hear the fundamental rights petition submitted by Attorney At Law Aruna Laksiri Unawatuna regarding the presidential election on Monday. The Petition will be taken at the bar of a three-bench Supreme Court Judge.
The Fundamental Rights petition has been filed asserting that holding a Presidential Election without the proper enactment of the 19th Constitutional Amendment violates the fundamental rights of the people of Sri Lanka.
The petitioner, Lawyer requests from the Supreme Court to issue an order to hold a referendum for the approval of the 19th Constitutional Amendment before conducting the Presidential Election.
In this petition, the Secretary General of Parliament and the Attorney General were named as respondents.
This was the second FR petition produced against holding the Presidential election. Last Monday the fuiller Bench of the Supreme Court dismissed a petition filed by a businessman C.DLenawa who requested to delay the election citing constitutional issues.
