Election Commission Chairman RML Ratnayake said that the “Presidential Election Notice” will be declared in the coming fortnight, Sunday Mawbima newspaper reports.
He stated that even though the Election Commission is constitutionally empowered to hold the presidential election after next Wednesday (July 17), the date will not be announced on that day. The election commission will meet and announce the scheduled dates of the presidential election process before the end of July.
The chairman Ratnayake, who joined Mawbima in a special discussion, announced that the election period will begin with the declaration of the presidential election notice. Nominations will be accepted between 16 and 21 days from the particular date and voting will be held between 04 to 06 weeks from the date of publication of the relevant notice.
However, he emphasized constitutionally the presidential election should be held between September 17 and October 16.
