C.D Lenawa , an entrepreneur has submitted a petition to the Supreme Court seeking an interpretation of the tenure of the current President in accordance with the Constitution and called for an interim order to delay the upcoming presidential election until this interpretation is delivered.
In his petition he has emphasized the need for the Supreme Court to clarify the exact duration of the President’s term.
Sri Lanka’s National Election Commission recently said that steps are underway to hold the Presidential Election in time . Accordingly the Commission said that they will declare the election with the relevant gazzette after July 17 and the election will be held on a date between 17 th September and 16th of October this year.The election commission also has instructed authorities to prepare for the Presidential polls in the coming months.
Meanwhile some Media reported that supporters of the President Ranil Wickemesinghe are looking for ways to extend the President’s tenure using the allocations available in the constitution.
