Decreased Patient Turnout for Eye Surgery at National Eye Hospital Raises Safety Concerns

The National Eye Hospital has witnessed a significant decline in the number of patients seeking surgery, according to sources within the hospital. Recent incidents involving severe allergic reactions and adverse effects during eye surgeries have prompted concerns among prospective patients.

A mother passed away recently during an eye surgery at the Colombo National Eye Hospital. Additionally, other patients suffered allergic reactions to the prednisolone liquid used in eye surgeries, resulting in severe vision complications. These incidents have caused a substantial decrease in the number of individuals seeking eye surgeries and treatments at the hospital.

Conversely, doctors from private hospitals in the suburbs of Colombo have reported an increase in the number of eye surgeries being performed. It is worth noting that both the anesthetic drug and prednisolone liquid have been discontinued for use due to their associated risks.

Despite the discontinuation of the problematic drugs, patients are experiencing heightened fear, leading to a reluctance in pursuing necessary eye surgeries and treatments. This atmosphere of apprehension has considerably impacted the overall patient turnout.
