To avert a potential disaster, dedicated army officers worked tirelessly through torrential rains from last night (06) until this morning (07) to stabilize the embankment constructed in Matara Attuda as part of the Nilwala project to mitigate flooding.
Over 100 soldiers from the 61st Brigade of the Sri Lanka Army participated in this arduous operation, which spanned the entire night despite the relentless downpour. Their steadfast efforts were aimed at safeguarding the lives and property of the local populace.
At present, the inclement weather has forced over 2,500 individuals in the Malimbada, Akurassa, Kamburupitiya, Thihagoda, Atthudawa, Matara Fort, and Galbamma areas of the Matara district to evacuate their homes.
Responding to the crisis, the Army, Navy, and disaster management teams have mobilized to provide essential relief and support to those affected by the adverse weather conditions.
