In a poignant tale that merges the realms of sport and heartfelt devotion, Hashen Randimal, a young rugby player from Sri Lanka, honors his mother’s final wish with an awe-inspiring performance on the field.

Hashen Randimal, a talented winger from Isipathana College, has emerged as a rising star among Sri Lanka’s school rugby teams. But it was not his skill alone that captured the nation’s attention; it was the profound story behind his unwavering determination.

Just one day prior, Hashen’s beloved mother, Himali, succumbed to her battle with cancer. Her funeral was looming, and it was her ardent wish to see her son become a champion rugby player. Fueled by a mix of grief and a desire to fulfill his mother’s dream, Hashen found the strength to step onto the field, his emotions raw but his resolve unbroken.

The match took place yesterday (30) at London Place, where Isipathana College faced off against St. Joseph’s College. The stakes were high, with St. Joseph’s being last year’s league runners-up and Isipathana College aiming for the championship. As the game commenced, a wave of emotions swept over Hashen.

Hashen Randimal scored the first try of the match. The crowd erupted in jubilation as Isipathana College fought their way to an intense victory, ultimately winning the match by a formidable margin of 28-18 points.

As the final whistle blew, Hashen’s exhaustion gave way to a flood of tears. The weight of his mother’s absence and the bittersweet triumph engulfed him, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of both his teammates and the opposing St. Joseph’s players.

The Isipathana players celebrated the victory by hugging Randimal and trying to console him. While the team captain of the Isipathana team was heard saying, “You don’t have to face this alone… She is the mother of all of us…” beating his chest.

In a display of sportsmanship and solidarity rarely seen, the St. Joseph’s team, still clad in their sports attire, paid a heartfelt visit to Randimal’s mother’s funeral home, wreath in hand.

The entire nation now speaks of Hashen Randimal, for his story is one that transcends the boundaries of sports and touches the core of human emotion.

In the face of immense personal loss, Hashen’s unwavering determination and unyielding courage have become an inspiration to all. This young man, who has become a symbol of limitless endurance, has taught us that true victory lies not only in triumph on the field but also in the strength to face adversity with unwavering resolve.
