The Peradeniya Hospital is currently conducting an investigation into the sudden death of a 21-year-old girl who was admitted to the hospital due to a stomach ailment yesterday (11). The young girl, named Chamodi Sandipani Madhushika Jayaratne, tragically passed away in front of her mother after receiving an injection.

Chamodi, a resident of Pottapitiya Alagalla area and the only child in her family, was admitted to Katapitiya Hospital on Monday (10) due to stomach-related issues. Concerned for their daughter’s well-being, Chamodi’s parents decided to transfer her to Peradeniya Hospital the following day (11). Her mother, Maya Indrania, accompanied her in the ambulance.

According to Maya, Chamodi was first admitted to the emergency unit around 9:00 am. Later in the day, she was referred to the seventh ward at approximately 12:30 pm. Tragically, it was in this ward that the fatal events occurred.

At around 3:30 pm, Chamodi received an injection. After receiving the first injection, Chamodi reported a slight scratching sensation on her hand. When Maya shared this concern with the nurse, she was assured that it was a common side effect and another injection was administered. Shortly after the second injection, Chamodi began experiencing severe symptoms. She screamed and rushed to the toilet with saline.

Determined to help her daughter, Maya followed her to the bathroom, only to witness the horrifying scene unfold. Chamodi started banging her head against the sink, and phlegm came out of her mouth. Her face turned blue, and despite Maya’s desperate pleas, Chamodi never regained consciousness. The hospital staff rushed to her aid but were unable to save her life.

Chamodi’s devastated father, Y. G. Jayarathna, shared his heart-wrenching account of the ordeal. According to him, Chamodi complained of stomach pain, diarrhea, and vomiting, leading to her admission at Katapitiya Hospital. On the day of her transfer to Peradeniya Hospital, she was initially treated in the emergency room before being moved to ward 07.

The Peradeniya Teaching Hospital has initiated an investigation into the incident. A spokesperson from the hospital stated that they would be conducting a thorough examination to determine the cause of the young girl’s tragic demise.
