The Mullaitivu High Court Judge, AMA Sahabdeen, handed down a five-year prison sentence with hard labor to a woman from Mullaitivu yesterday (17) for killing a one-day-old baby.
Alongside the prison term, the judge imposed a fine of ten thousand rupees, and an additional six-month prison sentence with community service was mandated in case of default on the fine payment.
The convict, a resident of Mallikaithiv in the Pudukudiirippu area of Mullaitivu, gave birth to a baby boy, named S. Avisu, on April 3, 2017, at the Pudukudiirippu Hospital in Mullaitivu. Tragically, on the very day of the baby’s birth and arrival at home, the infant was strangled and buried.
The Pudukudi Irippu Police conducted a thorough investigation into this distressing incident, leading to the arrest of the woman. She was subsequently brought before the court, and the case proceeded in the Kilinochchi District Court.
The gravity of the accusations against her could not be refuted, and the case was subsequently transferred to the Mullaitivu High Court. Following a meticulous examination of the case, the woman was convicted and sentenced to a five-year prison term with hard labor.
The sentencing came after all charges, as presented by the police, were proven beyond a shadow of a doubt.
