The Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) has requested the public and authorities to be responsible when celebrating the Deepavali festival over the weekend. The General Secretary of the GMOA Dr. Haritha Aluthge said while understanding it is a religiously important holiday health guidelines issued for such events by the Ministry of Health must be adhered to.

Noting that a large number of Hindus live in the Colombo area who originally hail from the estate areas, Aluthge said a serious threat of Covid will arise in the communities if they travel back to their villages to celebrate the festival. “Covid 19 could spread in areas like Badulla, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya” he said. “Therefore as ask the public to celebrate the holiday in a responsible manner” he added.
