There was a great deal of suspicion and doubt about whether the sinking of the X-Press Pearl ship near the port of Colombo was a plot against Sri Lanka by some interested elements to create mayhem in the country.

Dr Dan Malika Gunasekara, who is an expert in maritime law, says that could have been a deliberate attempt by someone to create chaos.

There is a strong suspicion among himself as well as many others with experience in the maritime field that this should have been investigated.

Dan Malika Gunasekara made these remarks. In an interview with journalist Chamuditha Samarawickrama’s Truth with Chamuditha YouTube channel,

Dr. Gunasekara says that this ship is a new ship and it does not sink that easily, even in the face of a fire of this magnitude. The only way it could sink is by opening a valve, allowing the water to seep and eventually make its way to the deck. There is a strong suspicion that something fishy and wayward has taken place.

Dr. Dan Gunasekara pointed out that there are still a number of problems regarding the taking of this ship into the port of Colombo and that if rescue operations had been carried out when it caught fire, the authorities could have saved more money.

It would have been far better because it would have been a more difficult and expensive task to sink a ship. It would be more economically beneficial to save the ship. There is a doubt that they were involved in drowning.

“I talked to captains and marine engineers about this.

This is a new ship. Such a ship does not sink so easily. A proper investigation could have been done to find out the truth about this if the relevant parts of the ship were available.

But by now, salvage companies have taken away these critical parts. As far as I know, even the unit similar to the black box containing the ship’s data has been taken away by some party. Our authorities have allowed it. I have suggested several times that a Presidential Commission of Inquiry should be appointed in order to uncover the truth and more details about the mishap.

As the only person with a master’s degree in maritime law in Sri Lanka, he expressed his displeasure that legal action was instituted in Singapore overlooking Sri Lanka. Dr. Gunasekara said if we had instituted action in Colombo, it would have been more advantageous.
