Due to the possibility of rockfalls and landslides caused by continuous rains, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) has warned motorists travelling between Pahala Kadugannawa and Mawanella on the Colombo–Kandy main road to exercise extreme caution.
DMC Director Pradeep Kodippili stated that the area is currently experiencing persistent rainfall.
Red notices have been issued for the Yatinuwara, Doluwa, Ududumbara, and Gangaihala Korale Divisional Secretariat areas in the Kandy District.
Mr. Kodippili further requested drivers and residents to remain alert for signs of landslides.
“Be vigilant about cracks and fissures in the ground and cracks in walls from the bottom upwards. It is very important to temporarily evacuate immediately if you observe warning signs such as unusual muddy water springs or drying natural springs,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Department of Irrigation has warned that minor flooding is likely in low-lying areas of the Mahaweli River basin during the next 24 hours.
In a statement, the Department said that due to recent rainfall in certain areas of the Mahaweli River catchment, minor flooding may occur in low-lying areas near the river within the Divisional Secretariat Divisions of Kinniya, Muthur, Seruvila, Welikanda, Lankapura, Thamankaduwa, and Dimbulagala.
Furthermore, the Batticaloa–Polonnaruwa road near Gallel, the Somawathiya Rajamaha Vihara access road, and surrounding areas are also at risk of minor flooding.
Accordingly, the Irrigation Department has advised devotees travelling to Somawathiya Rajamaha Vihara, as well as residents living near the Mahaweli River in these areas, to remain vigilant over the next few days.
The Department also stated that this warning will be effective from midnight on the 23rd.
