The United States executed targeted air strikes against two weapons and ammunition storage facilities in eastern Syria, known to be used by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards. This military action comes in response to recent attacks on US bases in Iraq and Syria, attributed to Iranian-backed militia groups.
The strikes, led by a pair of F-16 US Air Force fighters, near Abu Kamal, a town located along the border with Iraq. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin clarified that these strikes were “separate and distinct from the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.”
Notably, the attacks are a response to a series of recent but mostly unsuccessful attacks against US personnel in Iraq and Syria by Iranian-backed militia groups that commenced on October 17. The Pentagon reported 21 minor injuries among US military personnel as a result of these incidents.
US officials have attributed these attacks to Iranian proxy groups operating in the region. Iran provides support to bothHamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, including arms and financial backing. In response, Secretary Austin stated, “These Iranian-backed attacks against US forces are unacceptable and must stop. If attacks by Iran’s proxies against US forces continue, we will not hesitate to take further necessary measures to protect our people.”
Despite the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip and concerns about regional escalation, the US government emphasizes that these airstrikes are unrelated to the situation in Gaza and were not coordinated with Israel. The US sees them as a self-defense measure, urging Iran to refrain from further involvement.
Tensions in the region have prompted the US to take precautions, with the deployment of warships, fighter aircraft, and the movement of 900 US troops to the area in recent weeks. The US, perceived as a close ally of Israel in much of the Arab world, keeps its bases on high alert due to concerns about potential Iranian-backed militia attacks.
This move is reminiscent of a similar action in March when the US conducted multiple airstrikes in eastern Syria against Iran-linked groups following a drone attack that killed a US contractor. The situation underscores the delicate balance of power and alliances in the Middle East, with the US working to mitigate the risk of further escalations in the region.
