The Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court today ordered the immigration authorities to temporarily suspend the travel ban imposed against former Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Russia Udayanga Weeratunga.
Udayanga Weeratunga who was granted permission to travel overseas earlier, today made an application to temporarily suspend the travel ban through his lawyers. They pointed out at the court that Udayanga Weeratunga was instrumental in bringing Russian tourists to Sri Lanka.
Udayanga Weeratunga was subjected to a travel ban against the alleged MiG aircraft deal. The value of the alleged deal was estimated at US$14 million. This is in connection with the financial fraud that is alleged to have taken place in procuring seven MiG-27 ground attack aircraft for the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF).
