A tragic incident unfolded today (02) on the Mahiyangana main road in Kandy near Warapitiya Bandaranaike National School. At approximately 4:00 PM, a 15-foot-wide mara tree toppled, resulting in the death of one person and causing serious injuries to another person and a woman.

Following the accident, the three injured individuals were promptly admitted to the Kandy National Hospital. Tragically, one of them passed away due to their injuries.

According to eyewitnesses, the victim and the two injured individuals were standing near a box store when the massive tree fell, crushing three vehicles and landing on the nearby box store. The sudden collapse of the tree also caused significant damage to the electrical wiring system, posing an additional risk of electrocution for the victims.

Fortunately, a couple and their three-year-old child, who were inside a van severely damaged in the accident, managed to escape unharmed. However, a three-wheeler and a motorcycle were also among the casualties, sustaining damage in the incident.
