When three female officers in the history of the Sri Lanka Police are promoted to the rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police at the same time, for the first time in the history of the police, another rare incident is being written. Both the wife and the husband became DIGs.  Wife of  D.I.G Mahinda Gunaratne, Mrs N.D. Seneviratne who was a SSP of Police recetlypromoted to DIG position.  Until his promotion Mrs. Seneviratne served in the State Intelligence Service. Now she will be given a new portfolio.

Her husband is serving as the Deputy Inspector General of Police for  the Kalutara District. He also served for a long time in the State Intelligence Service and the elite security forces.

Both of them joined the police force in 1987 and 1988 when terror reigned in the country. At that time NIB To the National Intelligence Bureau. Mrs. Seneviratne joined as a Sub Inspector in 1987 and Mr. Gunaratne joined in 1988 as a Sub Inspector.

These two also fall in love early on. The couple got married in 1998 and Gunaratne was promoted to the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police at the same time. He was then serving in the security forces of President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga.

Although Gunaratne did not inherit a generation of police, Seneviratne inherited a generation of police. She grew up in the company of the police from an early age. The police were not a raw place for her because she went straight to the police even after going to school. That was because her parents were also police officers.

Mrs. Seneviratne’s mother was a member of the Sri Lanka Police’s inaugural Women’s Brigade. When she joined the police, thousands of female officers were not in the police force as they are today. There were less than 100 people. She still enjoys that history. Pramila Divakara is one of her contemporaries. Without her, a well-known figure in the Sri Lanka Police, women officers today would not have been able to come this far. Seneviratne’s mother is proud of that.

The couple has two children. Both are of educational age.
