The Kandy–Colombo main road, which reopened yesterday (3 ) following safety assessments and stabilisation work in Pahala Kadugannawa, has been partially re-restricted to traffic from the Ganethenna area today (4) as a precautionary measure.
The road had been closed on 26 November after the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) warned that continuous heavy rainfall had destabilised slopes, creating a high risk of rock and earth-mound collapses. Following urgent stabilisation work, the Road Development Authority (RDA) allowed normal traffic through the section yesterday.
The restriction today is intended to ensure safety in the Ganethenna section, where a mound of earth and rocks had fallen on a shop and a house a few weeks ago. Only vehicles belonging to essential services and disaster relief operations are being allowed to pass, while Kadugannawa Police have set up roadblocks to enforce the closure.
The RDA said engineering and field crews continue inspections and slope protection work across affected districts. It also reported that 159 roads blocked by landslides, fallen trees, and erosion after Cyclone Ditwah have now been cleared, including major routes such as:
• A-004: Colombo–Ratnapura–Wellawaya–Batticaloa Road
• A-026: Kandy–Mahiyanganaya–Padiyathalawa Road
• AA-006: Ambepussa–Kurunegala–Trincomalee Road
• AA-010: Katugastota–Kurunegala–Puttalam Road
• AA-003: Peliyagoda–Puttalam Road
