Former cricket star Dhammika Niroshana, who once led the national under-19 team, was tragically shot and killed last night (16). He was a shining cricket talent of his time, especially noted for captaining Ambalangoda Devananda College’s team in 2002.
Dhammika was a talented right-arm fast bowler and a promising young player with a bright future in cricket. He had an impressive career trajectory, leading Sri Lanka’s Under-19 team with players like Upul Tharanga, Dhammika Prasad, and Farveez Maharuf under his wing.

Despite his skills, Dhammika’s national cricket dreams never materialized after his under-19 tenure. Nevertheless, he continued to play first-class cricket, representing clubs such as Ambalangoda Sinha Sports Club, Galle Cricket Club, and Chilaw Marians. In his 12 first-class matches for Galle Cricket Club and Chilaw Marians, he scored 269 runs and took notable wickets.
Tragically, his life took a sudden turn. Last night, while attending a funeral in his neighborhood, Dhammika was fatally shot in the head under mysterious circumstances. Police suspect the involvement of criminal elements, although Dhammika himself had no criminal record.


Dhammika Niroshana’s untimely death has shocked the cricket community and his local neighborhood. He was a beloved figure whose potential in cricket was undeniable. The investigation into his murder is ongoing, with authorities searching for answers.
