A suspect was apprehended yesterday (03) by officers of the Intelligence Division of Trichy Customs, India, along with 4.634 kg of gold biscuits valued at about 15 crores rupees. The gold was being transported from Thalaimannar to India.
The arrested suspect, a resident of Mannar temporarily residing in Ramanathanpuram, India, had packed 916 pieces of gold in the form of gold biscuits and gold pieces in sacks.
The Trichy customs officials received information about the illegal transport of gold from Thalaimannar to India. The suspect drove the boat alone, and upon arrival at Trichy Pamban port, another person on a motorcycle approached him. As soon as they saw customs officials, the individual abandoned the motorcycle and fled.
The customs officials seized both the gold and the motorcycle, handing them over to the Rameswaram Police for further investigation.
