Sri Lankan Ambassador to Thailand, Poj Harnpol, has clarified that there has been no decision made by the Thai government regarding the return of elephants such as Tairaja, Kandula Raja, or any other elephants.
Addressing the issue surrounding the recovery of the elephants, Ambassador Harnpol stated that despite various posts circulating on social media, no official decision has been reached at the diplomatic level.
Ambassador Harnpol, who arrived in Kandy on the today (06) morning, paid respects to the Tooth Relic at Sri Dalada Maligawa and received blessings. He then engaged in a discussion with Pradeep Nilanga Dela, the Diyawadana Nilame.
During their meeting, the ambassador expressed that Muthuraja Etu, the recovering elephant, has become a source of controversy due to untrue news.
As part of the ambassador’s delegation, they visited Suduhumpola Rajamaha Vihara to observe Tairaja, who are currently separated from the rest of the elephant group due to exhaustion.
Speaking to the media, Pradeep Nilanga Dela, the Diyawadana Nilame of Sri Dalada Maliga, reassured that the elephants will not be mistreated. He acknowledged that while elephants receive proper treatment and care, the lack of hospitals equipped to handle post-surgical care for the animals remains a challenge.
He further emphasized the difficulties faced by the caretakers of domesticated elephants following the incident involving Muthuraja, expressing their deep sorrow. He also highlighted the efforts taken by many individuals and organizations to ensure the well-being of elephants, while acknowledging the need for technical medical equipment and tools to address animal healthcare needs.
He mentioned that there are approximately 100 domesticated elephants residing in households and temples, while the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is home to around 200 domesticated elephants. He assured that many of these elephants are in safe conditions.
Professor Ashoka Dangolla from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Peradeniya University, who is responsible for the treatment of elephants at the Sri Dalada Maligawa, also attended the event, providing valuable insights into the medical aspect of elephant care.
