Dawoodi Bohra community’s spiritual convention ‘Ashara Mubaraka’ which is highly recognized by Sri Lanka’s tourism sector as a potential revenue-generating event has been shifted from Sri Lanka to Karachi in Pakistan Sunday Times reports. The event was earlier scheduled to be held in Colombo in July. That was due to the spiritual leader of the Dawoodi Bohra community, His Holiness Dr. Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin selecting Karachchi despite several countries offering hosting facilities for the event.
However, assuming the event will take place in Sri Lanka as usual, several Bhora people from several countries have booked their hotels in Colombo. Still, the decision has prompted them to cancel those bookings.
Although the main event is to happen in Karachi, there will be satellite streams of the sermons delivered by its leader that will be telecast here. Hoteliers believe some of the booked visitors will arrive in Sri Lanka.
In addition, those who may have visa issues when traveling to Pakistan may come to Colombo.
The Dawoodi Bohra community is a Shia Muslim sect known for its rich history, distinctive cultural practices, and close-knit social structure. Originating in Yemen in the 11th century, the Dawoodi Bohras are followers of the Fatimid Ismaili tradition, tracing their spiritual lineage to Imam Ali and the Prophet Muhammad. The community later migrated to India, where it established significant populations in Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan, and has since spread globally with members residing in various countries including the United States, Canada, and East Africa.
The spiritual leader of the Dawoodi Bohra community is known as the “Da’i al-Mutlaq” (Absolute Missionary). The current Da’i al-Mutlaq, His Holiness Dr. Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin, assumed office in January 2014, following the passing of his predecessor, Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin. Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin is the 53rd Da’i al-Mutlaq and is revered for his spiritual guidance, educational initiatives, and efforts to preserve the community’s heritage.
Under his leadership, the Dawoodi Bohra community has continued to thrive, emphasizing values such as education, cleanliness, and environmental sustainability. Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin has promoted various philanthropic activities, including projects to provide clean water, improve healthcare, and support educational institutions. His initiatives often focus on fostering self-reliance and economic stability within the community.
The Dawoodi Bohras are also known for their distinctive cultural practices. They wear traditional attire, with men donning white robes and caps, while women wear colorful Rida, a two-piece garment. Community life revolves around the local mosque, which serves as a center for religious and social activities. The Bohra cuisine, known for its rich flavors and variety, is another unique aspect of their cultural heritage.
Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin’s leadership is marked by a commitment to upholding the values of compassion, community service, and spiritual devotion. His guidance has helped the Dawoodi Bohra community navigate modern challenges while remaining deeply rooted in their traditions and faith.
