In an unexpected turn of events, at the Twenty20 World Cup  Afghanistan delivered a stunning defeat to Australia a team widely expected to dominate the tournament. Chasing a modest target of 148, Australia’s strong batting lineup crumbled, managing only 127 runs. This unexpected victory by Afghanistan not only marked the lowest total scored in T20Is between these teams but also showcased their rising prowess on the global stage.

At the Anos Well Stadium in Kingstown, St. Vincent, the Australian team faced an unexpected and historic defeat against Afghanistan. Winning the toss, Australia opted to bowl first. Afghanistan had a strong start, with an opening partnership of 118 runs. Rahmanullah Gurbaz scored 60 runs off 49 balls, including 4 fours and 4 sixes, while Ibrahim Zadran contributed 51 runs from 48 balls with 6 fours. Despite the solid opening, Australian bowlers managed to restrict Afghanistan to 148 runs in 20 overs.

Pat Cummins took 3 wickets for 28 runs, Adam Zampa claimed 2 wickets for 28 runs, and Marcus Stoinis bowled economically with no wickets for 19 runs.

In response, Australia struggled right from the beginning. Opener Travis Head was dismissed for a duck by Naveen-ul-Haq. David Warner followed soon, scoring only 3 runs before being caught off Mohammad Nabi’s delivery. The rest of the Australian lineup failed to make significant contributions, with only Glenn Maxwell fighting back with 59 runs off 41 balls. Australia was eventually bowled out for 127 runs, falling short by 21 runs.

Gulbadin Nabi’s exceptional performance with the ball, taking 4 wickets for 20 runs in 4 overs, earned him the hero of the match title. Naveen-ul-Haq supported with 3 wickets for 20 runs. Contributions from Azmatullah Omarzai, Mohammad Nabi, and Rashid Khan, who each took a wicket, were crucial in securing the victory.

Despite this win, Australia remains ahead of Afghanistan in the points table due to a better net run rate. The undefeated Indian team and Australia top the first division, while Afghanistan follows closely. In the second division, South Africa leads with West Indies in second place. This match will be remembered as a landmark victory for Afghanistan, demonstrating their potential to challenge the top teams in international cricket.
