A Human organ trafficking racket is being inquired into by the Sri Lanka Medical Council.
The Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) has begun its hearing into the complaint made by an anti-human organ trafficking group through Attorney-at-Law Indunil Bandara against an illegal kidney trafficking racket that has been continuing for years.
Dr Ranga Migara Weerakkodi and Dr Monique Ambepitiya of the Matara District Hospital, who have been involved in the coordination process of this illegal organ trafficking, will be examined under oath by the committee members of the SLMC, Dr Jayantha Jayawardena and Dr S. Shanmugam.
However, the petitioners allege that there is a group of high-ranking officials of the Ministry of Health who receive monthly payments for facilitating the modus-operandi of this racket and a few powerful members of the SLMC are also benefited from this. They also allege that this illegal business runs into billions of rupees annually.
The petitioners are apprehensive about whether the investigations and the inquiry will be swept under the carpet by the authorities, as happened on an earlier occasion.
