Inefficiency of Senior Police Officers Blamed for Rise in Crimes in Southern and Western Provinces

The Inspector General of Police, in a special discussion convened by Public Security Minister Tiran Alas, has attributed the increase in murders and crimes in the Southern and Western Provinces to the inefficiency of senior police officers and police station commanders in those regions.

During the meeting, the Inspector General of Police issued immediate orders to police chiefs to remove unfit officers from their positions and appoint suitable replacements. He also emphasized the need for swift and stringent action to address the rising murder cases in the two provinces.

Participants in the discussion included Public Security Ministry Secretary Vyani Gunathilake, Inspector General of Police D.C. Wickramaratne, Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police Deshbandu Tennakone, Southern Province Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police S.C Medawatta, and Special Task Force Commander DIG Varuna Jayasundara.

The Minister, in agreement with the Inspector General of Police, emphasized the strict enforcement of the law in dealing with murderers and reiterated that no undue influence would be tolerated in such operations. The Minister also mentioned receiving a certificate from the President regarding this matter.

Additionally, the Minister announced a general amnesty until July 31 for individuals to voluntarily surrender firearms that are unlicensed or have not been renewed. After the amnesty period, the police, along with other intelligence agencies, will conduct raids to seize illegal firearms.
