A new facility for issuing driving licenses to foreigners visiting Sri Lanka will open at the Katunayake International Airport from today (03), according to the Commissioner General of Motor Traffic, Kamal Amarasinghe. The initiative aims to make self-transportation more convenient for foreign travelers.
Previously, this service was only available at the Department of Motor Traffic office in Werahera. However, starting tomorrow, tourists can obtain their driving licenses directly at the airport upon arrival.
The Commissioner noted that many foreigners rent vehicles, especially light vehicles, motorcycles, and three-wheelers, from Katunayake or nearby areas to travel around the country on their own.
Under the new system, driving licenses will be issued only for light vehicles and motorcycles. Licenses for heavy vehicles or three-wheelers will not be granted to foreign visitors.
