An 18-year-old student representing the First XV rugby team of a leading Colombo school has been arrested by the Kandy Police for carrying a T-56 live bullet and two empty cartridges. He had arrived in Kandy to watch the Dalada Perahera.
An army soldier, who was with the student at the time, was also arrested after being found in possession of two live T-56 bullets. The bullets were detected by a security scanner as they attempted to enter the premises of the Sri Dalada Maligawa near the Patthini Devalaya in Kandy.
The soldier stated that he was on his way home to Ruwanwella on a two-day leave and had not realized that the bullets were in his bag.
The arrested student is a resident of Mohandiram Lane, Colombo.
According to police, both individuals will be produced before the court. Further investigations are being carried out by the Kandy Police.
