Professor of Geography Athula Senaratne urges the people to be aware of the probability of an impending earthquake in the forthcoming week encompassing India and Sri Lanka.
The institute engaged in research in the Indian border territory is an institution with the most innovative technology in the world. The institute is carrying out extensive scientific research on the borders of India and the subterranean movements of the earth.
The professor said that the National Geological Science Research Institute of India is capable of issuing warnings of imminent earth tremors and has intensified its research in Indian soil with high intensity on the border. This was following the devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria.
Speaking to Lankans, Professor Athula Senaratne said:
“The National Geological Science Research Institute of India is closely monitoring the behavior of the seismic plates and is concerned about the earthquakes in the border territory of India.” They have very advanced technology with international recognition.
“We also need to pay attention to their findings. As Sri Lankans, we need to take care of what is likely to happen. I can’t say for a certain time frame. However, people living in older buildings in the earthquake-prone central mountain range should exercise extreme care. The stretch from Trincomalee to Ussangoda also has a high potential for earthquakes, he said.
However, it could happen in other areas too if they were vulnerable to changes in the seismic plates and subterranean movements of the earth, Professor Athula Senaratne said.
