The Department of Meteorology says the low-pressure area in the southwest Bay of Bengal may strengthen into a depression within the next 30 hours. This system, located southwest of Sri Lanka, is expected to bring increased rain and wind across the country over the coming days.
According to the department, many parts of the island will experience cloudy skies, with frequent showers or thundershowers. Very heavy rainfall of more than 150 mm is possible in some areas of the Eastern, Central, and Uva Provinces, as well as the Polonnaruwa District. Other regions may receive rainfall above 100 mm.
Strong winds of around 50 km/h may occur at times in the Northern, North-Central, North-Western, Western and Eastern Provinces, and in the Hambantota and Matale Districts. Winds up to 40 km/h can be expected in other parts of the island.
The Met Department urges the public to pay close attention to upcoming weather advisories. People are also advised to take necessary precautions to minimize risks caused by strong winds and lightning.
A Red Warning issued by the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre remains in effect until 10.30 p.m. on November 26, 2025, due to the developing low-pressure system.
The authorities request everyone to remain alert and follow official updates as the weather situation continues to develop.
